The Importance of Wearing Sunscreen
The season of sun and fun can be wonderful for reducing stress and keeping you active - just remember to wear your SUNSCREEN! Time flies when you're swimming, jet skiing, or just hanging out in your backyard, so it's easy to expose yourself to too much sunlight without it feeling like you are doing so. Here are some good reasons to remember to wear sunscreen: 1.Sun damage is the number one cause of skin cancer 2.Sun damage is the number one cause of premature aging of the skin 3.Just twenty minutes of sun exposure can damage fair skin. 4.Sun damage is impossible to un-do. Once you've damaged your skin through over-exposureto UV rays, it's damaged for life, and the effects are cumulative. Here are some important facts to remember when choosing and applying sunscreen: 1.Choose a "Broad Spectrum" sunscreen so it will sheild from both UVA and UVB rays. 2.If you will be sweating or getting wet, choose a waterproof sunscreen so that it is not rinsed away too quickly. 3.Determine what level of SPF you need by anticipating your length of exposure. A person of medium skin tone who will be exposed to sunlight for two hours will need an SPF 20, three hours will require 30 SPF, five hours will require 50 SPF. If you have fair skin, double the SPF and/or apply twice as often. Dark skin tones can get away with SPF 15 for up to three hours. 4.Apply sunscreen to clean, dry skin BEFORE going out into the sun. Sunscreen applied to skin that already has even a few minutes of sun exposure is less able to protect the skin because the skin has already absorbed some UVA and UVB rays. It's always a good idea to wear a hat and UV protective sunglasses, and put a shirt or cover-up on if you begin to feel hot. If your hair is going to be exposed, use a sun-protective shampoo and conditioner that will not only protect your hair, but your scalp as well. Remember these basic sunscreen tips, and you will look and feel great all summer, and not have to worry about the efects of sun damage when you get older.
